When the city council of Madrid decided to apply to host the Olympic Games of 2012, the extension of La Peineta Stadium was required in order to reach the capacity that was needed for an Olympic event. In addition, the stadium had to be adapted to hold football matches so as to guarantee its future use once the Games had finished.
In order to achieve this, the proposed solution offered a great deal of flexibility in relation to the awarding or not awarding of the organization of the 2012 Olympics to the city. If it was not chosen, the sports facility would be built in the appropriate way to become a modern football stadium that was perfectly adapted to turn into the home of a First Division team.
Thus, the project would provide a solution that would be capable of fully responding to both the decisions of the International Olympic Committee and the correct establishment and management of a great football facility.
The extension consisted in the completion of the current stadium in the unoccupied areas of the landscaped bowl in the project of la Peineta by building two new continuous stands. The entire sports complex would be covered with a light roof that would be adapted to the different situations, thus giving unity to the whole intervention.
