Contemporary Arts Creation Center, Cordoba

PROJECT REPORT

A building measuring 350m long by 32m high will inevitably create an “in front” and a “behind”. In front: the park, the meander of the river, and the historical city. Behind, in a less advantageous position, will be other areas of the city, including this Arts Centre.

This position, which could be called segregated, has led to a design that is markedly independent in nature, featuring a central floor, rarely seen these days. A series of bodies serving complementary functions make up the perimeter of a large central space that is the real heart of the project. This foundational, classical order, intense and essential in nature, is neutral enough to be able to incorporate very different functions which are currently difficult to foresee. In summary, our proposal is a highly versatile solution, whose flexibility does not mean a formal character loss.

The building’s layout creates symmetries that are only broken, contextually at least, in the part facing the new bridge, the only link with the historical city that will remain and which will be home to more specific functions, tentatively opening to the new activity the Conference Center will generate.

The building is divided into diverse sections surrounding the central area. This split in the building is intended to recover the scale and character of a city like Córdoba against the imposing volume of the Conference Centre. The courtyards, which surround and structure the building, also contribute to this. The courtyards may feature archaeological remains or could be used as exhibition spaces.
