Faculties for ‘École Centrale’ and Campus Masterplan for Saclay University, Paris

PROJECT REPORT

Nowadays, the Saclay plateau is partially occupied by a number of Institutions, most of them dedicated to research and teaching.

The building of the Ecole Centrale serves a dual scheme. On one hand, it will constitute almost 50% of the perimeter of the new urban space, on both sides of it, its two parts connected by one of the bridge buildings. The main flow of traffic and more public uses will be concentrated on the perimeter, which will be equipped with the precision and geometric requirements necessary for the proper definition of the proposed urban space.

Moreover, just behind this first area, the building becomes more free, the volumes more random, in accordance with the freedom of the design and its development over time, which is to be expected in an institution of this entity. The building will gradually reduce in floors as it climbs towards the woods, thus integrating the volume constructed for those laboratories so dangerous that there must be nothing on or under them.

The bridge building of the Ecole Centrale brings together all uses related to student life -the university’s programs and use for sport- in this way placing students at the epicenter of this urban organization, at the very heart of the Ecole Centrale.

In this bridge building the aim is to bring further educational value to such an institution dedicated to teaching the science of engineering.
