Human Evolution Museum and congress center, Burgos, Burgos

PROJECT REPORT

The proposal for the Museum of Human Evolution and the Burgos Conference Center is linked to the walkways that run alongside the Arlanzor River by poplars randomly planted. With an architecture built with the earth itself, this project attempts to meet the demands of its content – the discoveries of the Atapuerca archaeological site – as well as the conditions imposed by its urban context. Following the street alignments on its southern border, the building is broken up on the opposite side leaving a public space towards the river which emphasises the link of this new urban landmark with the cathedral and castle. A double building makes its uses explicit, assigning a rectilinear and modular geometry to the conference center and organic, broken contours to the exhibition spaces. The slanted roof of the building – dropping from the street to the square- swerves at one point to reach its highest level over the skylight-viewpoint, providing views of a replica of the archaeological remains. The definition of materials supports the duality of the project, assigning a concrete façade to the Congress Center and using compressed earth walls to remind us of the excavation to which the museum is dedicated.
