Faculty of Law of the Groningen University, Groningen

PROJECT REPORT

The project of the transformation of the public library of Groningen into the new Faculty of Law requires to approach the problem according to the rational and realistic design principles of its architect Giorgio Grassi. At the same time, it’s important to give its own identity to the Faculty, due to the rigorous architectonical clarity of library that the building has nowadays. The building adapts for both extension and integration of new functions, creating synergies between both interventions. To construct over Grassi’s architecture makes the decisions to be taken seemingly easier, precisely because of his design method, following the autonomy and typology principles. A pure Architecture, clear and simple. Therefore, following Grassi’s ideas, it’s was decided to add a new floor. A new patio is added, which fits purely in the existing structure and volume, intensifying the long wings of the building. In this way, all workplaces are provided with sufficient daylight.
