Visual Arts National center at the old Tobacco Factory, Madrid

PROJECT REPORT

Our proposal for the transformation of the old Tobacco Factory building into the National Visual Arts Centre begins with the renovation of the original operating plan (three entrances from Embajadores Street), creating a new north–south orientation and generating a unique space and a grand entrance hall containing the new facilities, based around the three existing patios. The old street entrances will become displays advertising the Centre’s activities to visitors, with the new entrance opening out onto to the adjacent roundabout.

The first patio will cover all functions prior to the security gate. Two escalators ascend from the second patio, connecting the ground floor with the second floor, which is better suited to temporary exhibitions. The third patio will be the entrance and exit to the Cinema Museum and Photography Centre permanent exhibitions. The permanent nature of these exhibitions will allow for better adaptation to the existing premises, which are very inflexible. The first floor, separate from the main visitor areas, will hold the more restricted areas whose access requires accreditation.

An iconical and advertising value building which mission will be announce the new institution and exhibitions there celebrate, is orient to Glorieta de Embajadores and forms new building access. Shop and restaurant, both with exhibition independient timetables, are place in this building as well.
