Seville’s La Cartuja Stadium has begun the second phase of its expansion. The project, designed and refurbished by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, aims to reach a capacity of 71,374 spectators. This phase will position the stadium as the third largest in Spain, after the Santiago Bernabéu and the Camp Nou. The Sevillian company Heliopol, part of the Rusvel group, will be in charge of executing the works, with a budget of 15 million euros and a completion date scheduled for March 2025. Antonio Cruz closes the series ‘Grada | Geografías’ with a reflection on the Olympic Stadium of theCommunity of Madrid, known as ‘La Peineta’, currently transformed into the Cívitas Metropolitano. This capsule highlights the emblematic relationship between the stands, the stadium and its structure, underlining the exclusive use of reinforced concrete as the main material.
Accompanied by photographs by Duccio Malagamba, the capsule captures the evolution of the stadium, which
is now the home of the Atlético de Madrid football club, remaining an icon of sports architecture.

Inaugural event of the course ‘Interventions on existing buildings’, which took place in the building
refurbished by Cruz y Ortiz of the Banco Santander (former Mercantil). This three-day forum, sponsored by the Banco Santander Foundation and directed by the architect Antonio Ortiz, focuses on the debate on architecture,
specifically on interventions and restorations of existing buildings.
The forum is developed around the challenges and sensitivities involved in these interventions, especially with the support of local examples such as the rehabilitation of the building in Hernán Cortés and the future intervention in Faro Santander, directed by the architect David Chipperfield.
Participants in this course include leading architectural figures such as Rafael Moneo, Kees Kaan and other architects. After the inauguration, there was a guided tour of the building refurbished by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, and it was announced that Ana Botín, president of Banco Santander, will close the
event at the Palacio de La Magdalena.

The remodelling of the Cartuja stadium, designed by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, will increase its capacity by 12,442 seats, reaching a total of 71,374 spectators.
The project includes the elimination of the athletics track, the depression of the playing field and the construction of new stands.
In this first phase, accessibility will be improved and new spectator areas, toilets and services will be provided. For later phases, work will be carried out on the urbanisation of the exterior area, the façade, the refurbishment and enlargement of the VIP areas, as well as the digitalisation of the facilities. The works, which will begin in mid-July this year, will enable the stadium to meet the UEFA and FIFA standards required for the 2030 World Cup to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
With the expansion, the capacity of the Cartuja stadium will rise from fifth to third place nationally in terms of conditioning and only surpassed by the Nou Camp and the Santiago Bernabeu and ahead of the Cívitas Metropolitano (Atlético de Madrid) and the Benito Villamarín (Real Betis).
The Cartuja stadium, also built by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, was inaugurated on 5 May 1999 for that year’s World Athletics Championships. Its original design included an athletics track and had an initial capacity of 57,619 spectators. In addition to hosting the World Championships, it has hosted numerous sporting and non-sporting events throughout its 25-year history.

Seville – Santa Justa Train Station, designed by Cruz y Ortiz, breaks passenger record in 2023. https://www.cruzyortiz.com/seville-santa-justa-train-station-designed-by-cruz-y-ortiz-breaks-passenger-record-in-2023/ https://www.cruzyortiz.com/seville-santa-justa-train-station-designed-by-cruz-y-ortiz-breaks-passenger-record-in-2023/#comments Mon, 04 Mar 2024 16:05:59 +0000 https://www.cruzyortiz.com/?p=16855

Passenger traffic at Seville – Santa Justa Train Station reached an all-time record in 2023, with more than 10.1 million passengers per year. This figure represents a significant growth compared to previous records, including the numbers obtained during the 1992 Universal Exhibition. The station, designed by our study, inaugurated in 1991 and has shown a steady increase in transport demand, partially due to the entry of new competitors in the liberalisation of high speed rail network.
This achievement highlights the important role of Seville – Santa Justa train station as an important national and regional transport centre.
